Tucked away in Gastown is a social enterprise and tech startup called Change Heroes, a team of designers, developers, innovators, and do-gooders led by Taylor Conroy, who are taking the concept of crowd funding and putting a humanitarian twist on it

“Minga” is the concept behind their newest project, taking inspiration from a common practice and call to action in Ecuador and bringing it back to Vancouver to help spark a campaign for social good.

Today, September 17th, marks the launch of their newest campaign, #MINGA for Mondaña, a month-long effort to rally groups of friends to completely (and sustainably) transform the rural village of Mondaña, Ecuador.   Each group’s efforts funds programs such as school houses, libraries, healthcare initiatives, and alternative income programs, all implemented by Change Heroes’ partner, Free The Children.

In Ecuador, when a minga is called, members from the entire community come together to complete a common goal – maybe it’s building a fence, maybe it’s fixing a roof, or harvesting crops.  It ‘s about teamwork. It’s about impact. The Change Heroes version of a minga is what you might call ‘modern day’.  The online platform is combining the power of this tradition with their “333” concept: 33 friends give $3.33 per day for three months, totaling $10,000 and funding one of the much needed projects in Mondaña– not too bad for giving up a few months worth of lattes.

To date, $1.47 million has already been raised through the Change Heroes platform from donors in over 40 countries.  With more than 221 campaigns already launched, many from right here in Vancouver.

From the jungle of Ecuador to an office in Gastown, the #MINGA for Mondaña campaign launch is calling on Vancouverites to not only become a part of the villages transformation, but also be some of the first to make the minga tradition a way of life.
