Canadian Blood Services is in urgent need of stem cell donors (especially visible minorities and males) between the ages of 17 and 35 to come forward to save the lives of blood cancer patients. Donors can register in minutes at onematch.ca.

If you would like to register in person, a donor drive is being held:

  • Sunday, September 7th between 12 pm and 8 pm at Guru Nanak Sikh Temple (7050 120 St., Surrey, BC)
  • Sunday, September, 14th afternoon at Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar Sikh Temple (347 Wood St., New Westminster, BC)

Why stem cell donors are so urgently needed, registration, and donation:

Stem cells in the bone marrow produce white blood cells which fight off infections and disease. In patients with blood cancers such as leukemia, the stem cells produce cancer cells, which crowd out the healthy white blood cells, and leave the body unable to fight disease and infection. A stem cell transplant from a healthy donor is needed so that a cancer patient can begin producing healthy white blood cells again.

It takes only a minute to register as a donor and you can literally save someone’s life. Once you have registered, OneMatch (Canadian Blood Services) will mail a swab kit to your house. Swab the inside of your cheek and mail it back to them. They will be able to tell if you are a matching donor from your swab sample. There is no need to donate blood unless you have been matched as a donor for someone with cancer. Once you have been matched as a donor, you can decide if you want to go ahead with the stem cell transplant. The transplant itself is a simple procedure; very similar to a blood test.

Please register to be a donor at onematch.ca or attend the donor drive at one of the Sikh temples.
