calgary snow storm

As much as 10 centimetres of snow fell and accumulated on the ground in much of Calgary throughout the day.

Forecasts of rain turned into a snowstorm warning when a large arctic air mass descended into southern Alberta.

The snow has been so heavy that some areas have even lost power. The city’s major roads and highways were in full gridlock with drivers caught by surprise without any winter tires.

This comes as temperatures were a summery 25°C on Sunday, just 24 hours ago. Temperatures quickly plunged to freezing levels overnight. In contrast, the average daily high for Calgary this month is 19°C.

Environment Canada predicts temperatures will hover at around 0°C until Thursday.

This is not the first time this year that Calgary has been bombarded with unseasonal snow. In May, a snowstorm dumped 20 centimetres in highly unseasonable snow.
