On Wednesday, September 17, one of Mexico’s most luxurious resort groups, Fidelis, is coming to Vancouver to find people to work at its Cancun-based ultra-premium property.

But why would a property from Cancun come all the way to Vancouver to hold a career fair?

Remember when looking for a job meant picking up the daily newspaper and scanning through the classified section, circling postings and spending afternoons on the phone trying to get an interview? Fortunately, the world all but did away with the introduction of career sites and job boards, giving job seekers the freedom to search, not just for the jobs that they may be able to get, but for the jobs that they wanted.

The world has now evolved even more, and people are realising that they’re no longer restricted to industries, companies or even geography. Social networks, Skype and faster internet are making it possible for people to choose where they want to live and work, and in record numbers, Canadians are choosing to work in tropical locations.

Developing economies, especially in tourist-friendly destinations, need increasing numbers of skilled staff, and in many cases the local job market just doesn’t have the experience and training to fill those roles.

That need has created opportunities for people willing to move to a life of sun and sand that had never existed in the past.

The result has been that hundreds, even thousands of people from major Canadian cities have taken advantage and are currently living and working in paradise, often generating better wages than they did at home, and paying a significantly reduced cost of living.

The ex-pats typically work in roles ranging from Tour Guide to Marketing Manager, and live a variety of different lives. Some look to escape the hectic 9-5 city life, so they carve out lifestyles that allow them to spend as much time as possible on the beach. Others are more driven, and became tired of trying to climb the corporate ladder, opting instead for an environment where they could create their own opportunities and move more quickly into the lifestyles that they wanted.

With our city’s extensive experience in tourism and hospitality, and everyone from students to senior managers starting to consider what their lives may be like if they were to make the move, it’s no wonder that the high end resorts are looking to Vancouver.

Fidelis Careers staffs the Grand Mayan and Mayan Palace resorts on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in Cancun. Recent expansions include the addition of Latin America’s only Cirque Du Soleil show. They’ll be holding a career fair from September 17 to 21 in Vancouver’s Rosewood Hotel Georgia where they’ll be looking to interview people with experience in marketing, hospitality, sales and customer service.
