There’s something about the women of Vancouver, you can barely take a few steps without being in the presence of a triple threat – brains, beauty and a go getter. Those three things describe Rimpy Sahota in a nutshell. The up and coming designer not only has an eye for designing for women, but she does everything with a lot of heart – read on to see the awesomeness that is Rimpy!

Who are you and what do you do?

A young fashion designer with a vision to revolutionize the way women look and feel about themselves. I am a creative and entrepreneurial hybrid with a double major in accounting & finance with a strong background in Fashion Design. I am a huge supporter of Canadian labels as I was a designer and buyer for Dynamite and Garage clothing in Montreal. Also, I was a buyer for lululemon in their corporate head office. I can’t wait to take these experiences and create a Canadian brand of my own.

Did you always know you were going to be a designer? How did you end up as one?

[Laughs] I’m 29 right now and if you were to pick up my grade 12 year book, you’d see that my future ambitions were to be a designer and run my own brand, which I turned into a reality. I was always sartorially inclined as a child and always retained a curiosity about how any garment was made. Growing up my mum would sew dresses for me and I would watch her hands work away and create masterpieces, one after the other and I’ve never stopped since.

Who is the ideal Rimpy Sahota shopper? What do you want your customers to feel when they wear you designs?

A woman with a mission to look fabulous and be fierce throughout her day. My ideal shopper is any woman who thrives in the limelight which is where my pieces will leave her. She is a confident powerhouse, a style maven and an icon. She opts for a simply chic lifestyle with minimal glitz and maximal class. My pieces are intricately cut and sewn to make any woman not only look sexy, but FEEL sexy without having to bare anything.

What are some of your best sellers?

My jacquard special edition always sells out because of the gorgeous color palette and the divine fit of the outfit itself. My yellow and mint ones are extremely popular amongst the sexy Yaletown crowd whereas my myuki satin black and white midi skirt sets are a hit in the lower mainland due to their timeless classy essence.

What are some other projects you’re working on right now? What can we expect from you?

I am currently working on my Holiday collection which I can’t wait to share with you guys! I am also getting a lot of feedback from Vancity men requesting me to design men’s clothing, so that is something I will venture into in the near future. A major project that is very close to my heart that I love working with is The Make A Wish Foundation where I want to raise awareness about equality amongst individuals especially children. I have six nieces and nephews whom I adore to bits and pieces so they make this project all the more meaningful to me.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? What do you want to accomplish?

I see myself lounging in a loveseat adorned with multiple strands of pearls in my own fashion house!

What advice would you give to aspiring female entrepreneurs?

I would tell all my aspiring ladies to only live up to your own expectations and once you reach them, exceed them and surprise yourself! No journey comes without its hurdles; use them as stepping stones to reach your goals rather than allowing them to push you back. We’re lucky to live in such a beautiful country where every individual is given all the tools to help them achieve their goals and all one needs to do is take that first step.

Vogue or Cosmo?

Vogue for business and Cosmo for pleasure! Haha!

What is one thing you’ll never be caught dead in?

Denim overalls! They look super cute on other girls but I’d rather die.

What is one quote that you live by?

“A women should be whoever and whatever she wants” and my personal quote, ”No man can stand between my closet and my chocolate!”

Where can we find you during your down time?

Either at the gym, with my nieces & nephews, wining & dining with my girlfriends, at the beach or in front of my TV with a bowl of ice cream watching runway or The Wolf of Wallstreet.

What is your biggest fear?

My biggest fear used to be that I would be an 80-year old woman kicking myself for all the chances I never took in opening up my  own business and now that I’ve finally done it, I aint scared of Sh*t. My personal experiences in life gave me thick skin and the strength to stand on my own.

What is one really embarrassing thing you’d never tell anyone?

I am probably the sappiest romantic you’ll ever meet! I love being in love!

Which fashion house would you collaborate with if you could?

That’s the toughest question I’ve had to answer all year [laughs]….Perhaps Eli Saab

Where do you see Vancouver fashion going?

I am so proud of all the local designers and so proud that I live in such a beautiful diverse city where the fashion is booming. Fashionistas/Fashionistos are everywhere ! The city is no longer flooded with black sweatpants but rather buzzing with budding fashion mavens with their own respective styles which make Vancouver such a diverse place to live in!
