Things are heating up on the Surrey election scene, and the race for the Mayor’s chair is about to get a lot more interesting. Barinder Rasode, known for her tough stance on crime, is expected to launch her campaign this Saturday, September 20.

Rasode’s announcement comes as the public continues to voice their frustration over skyrocketing crime in the city, with many saying their desperate calls for more police officers and new public safety measures have been ignored.

Sources say that Rasode will outline her vision for Surrey at the event, and say the upcoming election will be a choice about whether the city embarks on a safe and prosperous future, or continues to do things the same old way they’ve always been done.

Rasode gained a lot of community support after she left the Surrey First caucus to sit as an independent on Council, after being unable to convince the party to address Surrey’s crime problem.

Since then, Rasode has met with many residents and businesses to listen to their concerns and hear ideas on how to improve safety, fix traffic and transit issues, and better manage Surrey’s rapid population growth.

Saturday’s event is open to the public at 2 p.m. at SFU’s Surrey Grand Hall (250-13450 102nd Avenue). See the Facebook event or www.barinderrasode.com for more info.
