Window shades to keep your office "cool"

The hot summer heat outside means a rise of temperature, and your company’s Hydro bill, inside. Since windows are the greatest source of heat entering a building, we must find a way to control the heat, and keep our Vancouver offices a pleasant and comfortable place to work.

The answer: Energy Efficient Window Coverings. Proper window treatments not only block the heat out, but they also reduce your cooling costs substantially. Here’s two of the best types of window coverings to keep the heat out of your office and your cooling costs down:

Honeycomb Shades

These shades are the best window coverings in terms of insulation and energy efficiency. Honeycomb Shades create a pocket of air that help insulate the room, preventing heat absorption in the summer and heat loss in the winter. So they’re often referred to as the best “all-year round” window covering!

Single-Cell

Honeycomb Shades are constructed to ensure that the layer facing outwards is white and the layer facing inside the room is a colour of your choosing. This allows you keep the outside appearance uniform, while giving you the freedom and creativity to design the interior of your office.

To increase the functionality of a Honeycomb shade, you can get them with a top down bottom up feature (pictured below) giving you an outside view, but still providing protection from the sun.

Solar Roller Shades

You will find Roller Shades in many commercial settings as they are one of the most popular window coverings. In most commercial settings, Solar Roller Shades are used because of their efficient protection from the sun (and its UV Rays), in combination with the preservation of the view to the outside world. Solar Shades, like Honeycomb Shades, reflect light energy back out that would otherwise be converted to heat energy inside your office.

Solar Roller Shades come in varying degrees of “openness.” Most fabrics range anywhere from 1% to 10%. A higher percentage, like 10%, will provide the most light (and heat) into the office, while a lower percentage, like 1%, will provide the least amount of light (and heat). The lower the percentage, the more privacy that the office gets.

Here at Vancity Buzz, we were in this exact situation. As the summer was quickly approaching, the office was getting blazing hot during the day. It was spiralling out of control and something had to be done. After searching around, we came across Shade Works Window Fashions.

Shade Works is a Canadian, Online Window Fashions retailer. We told them about the problem we were facing and worked with them to come up with the perfect solution. We wanted shades that would protect us from the heat and the sun’s UV Rays but at the same time keeping our view of downtown, and keeping our cooling costs down.

Shade Works recommended a Basic 3% Solar Roller Shade. After receiving free samples and deciding on a colour, the order was placed and we couldn’t have been happier. We’ve definitely noticed a difference in the temperature in the office, and they look great!

Here’s some pictures of how our office turned out:
