Last week, millions of people were devastated to learn of Robin Williams’ tragic passing.
After the news broke, Rio Theatre’s audience requested that they play his films so that they may honour, celebrate, and enjoy his work again on the big screen. In tribute, they are screening The Birdcage and The Fisher King on Sunday, August 24.

The Birdcage (Mike Nichols, 1996):
A gay cabaret owner and his drag queen companion agree to put up a false straight front so that their son can introduce them to his fiancée’s right-wing moralistic parents. With Nathan Lane, Frank Azaria, Dianne Wiest, Gene Hackman, Calista Flockhart, Christine Baranski. *All ages welcome in the balcony.
The Fisher King (Terry Gilliam, 1991):
Robin Williams won a Golden Globe for his performance as Parry, a former professor who becomes unhinged and then homeless after witnessing his wife’s violent death in a bar shooting. A former radio DJ, suicidally despondent because of a terrible mistake he made, finds redemption in helping a deranged homeless man who was an unwitting victim of that mistake. With Jeff Bridges, Mercedes Ruehl, Amanda Plummer, Harry Shearer, David Hyde-Pierce, Kathy Najimy.
