$700 parakeet victim of birdnapping, suspect at large

A man walked into a Richmond pet store… and ran out with a stolen parakeet worth $700.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are turning to the public in the hopes of locating the suspect and the missing bird.

The birdnapping took place on August 10 at Ackroyd Pets and Aquariums, according to the RCMP, who say the thief nabbed Sky the parakeet and exited the shop with the bird stashed in a black bag.

Sky is a delicate critter, according to the RCMP. Pet store staff say the one-year-old male Indian Ringneck Parakeet is “sweet and friendly,” but would not likely survive if he were released or made a break for it. He is about 18-20 inches long, including a lengthy tail, and has powder blue plumage with a red beak. He has a metal ringband on one of his legs, and the store has certification papers for the bird.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, 35-40 years old, approximately 5’10”, with a heavy build with dark hair and glasses and was wearing a blue and white striped dress shirt, jean shorts, and black sandals.

Anyone with information on Sky’s whereabouts can call email Richmond_tips@rcmp-grc.gc.ca or remain anonymous by calling Crimsestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
