A 41-year-old man arrested late Thursday night by Metro Vancouver Transit Police has died in custody, and the RCMP has been called in to investigate.

The unidentified victim was taken into custody at 11:30 p.m. July 31 aboard a Coast Mountain Bus at the Surrey Central bus loop, according to Transit Police. His arrest for “irrational behaviour” was made under the Mental Health Act, though Transit Police note the man was compliant during apprehension.

The man was taken to hospital, however upon arrival, “officers noted that the man had gone into medical distress but despite immediate medical assistance, he was pronounced dead at 39 minutes after midnight” on August 1.

The Surrey RCMP have been called in to investigate.

The Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner has been informed of the death, and has opened a file to monitor the incident.
