The City of New Westminster has overcome development funding issues for one of the largest projects it has ever undertaken, turning it into a win-win at Anvil Centre and Merchant Square.

About two years ago, Vancity Buzz covered a story surrounding the development of Merchant Square and Anvil Centre project in downtown New Westminster.  The original developer pulled out on the funding of the construction, leaving the City to foot the bill of approximately $100 million on themselves.

New Westminster City Council knew that the project would help redeem the livelihood of the downtown core. In early March, 2014 the City sold Merchant Square office tower for $36.5 million. The office tower sits atop Anvil Centre which will remain a civic facility that includes:

  • Totaling 137,000 square feet of office space
  • Office spaces from 15,500 to 19,500 square feet
  • LEED Gold standard
  • 9 foot high ceilings
  • Floor to ceiling exterior glazing
  • Panoramic views of the Fraser River
  • Secure parking and bicycle garage
  • Conference facilities
  • 500 Guest Galas
  • Performance Arts Theater
  • Arts centre
  • Municipal museum and Archives
  • Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame
  • Tourism New Westminster
  • Street front retail space

Designed by Hughes Condon Marler Architects (HCMA), this signature gateway building will help cultivate rich cultural and arts future for the City. Anvil Centre and Merchant Square is being completed in association with MCM Interiors.
