Ron Howard gives us a behind the scenes look at hip-hop icon Jay-Z’s “Made in America” music festival that took place in Pittsburg back in 2012.

With in depth interviews with todays biggest musicians, local residents and stage/food truck workers, we are given insight into the creative process, the meaning of success and above all, the love of music.

THE GOOD – PERSPECTIVE

Ron Howard does a great job of getting different points of view from everyone involved in Jay-Z’s passion project.

From a city wide planning of the massive event to stories of the early days from artists like Janelle Monae, Rita Ora, Mike Snow, Run DMC (who hadn’t performed in over ten years) Jay-Z, and much more.

You’ll also see a woman trying to achieve her dream of owning her first food truck, a stage hand who loves what he does and an elderly woman who lives right across from the event and what her opinion of what “good music” is. Like I said, perspective.

This gave the doc a bit more substance and showed just how much these events can effect peoples lives and how much economic stability it can bring to a city in need.

THE BAD – NOT MANY FULL LIVE PERFORMANCES

The focus of this film was to showcase the meaning and emotional weight behind a big music festival but I really wanted to see complete stage performances.

Ron does show us artists on stage but they are only in short bursts. With such amazing artists on stage I felt like I wasn’t able to fully enjoy the reason why these musicians are some of the best in the biz.

You get so invested into the festival that you’re just left wanting to experience what all the people of philly got to experience.

It may of just been a matter of running time but it would of made the viewing experience as whole more emersive for me.

VERDICT

If you’re a fan of music festivals or just a fan of music in general, then there’s a lot to get out of this film.

Celebrating the joy and creativity that music festivals bring to the masses,  Made in America will surely get you pumped up for what’s left of the summer music season.

Great interviews, slick cinematography and an inspiring message of hope that with the right amount of determination and talent, any artist can make it.

Like Jay-Z says in the doc “I truely believe that everyone has genius level talent, you just have to find out what that is and share it with the world.” Amen, brother.
