Naked Man eats meal at Hastings and Main for artistic stunt (NSFW VIDEO)

Performance artist Brent Ray Fraser is not one to shy from controversy, or his own body. The 35-year-old Vancouverite is known for his focus on erotic and the human body, and a career of award-winning artwork and live performances.

In one of his latest endeavours, Fraser takes al fresco dining to a whole new level, as he sits down and enjoys a steak meal while fully nude at Hastings and Main outside the Carnegie Centre, all in the name of art.

WARNING (NSFW): The following video contains nudity.

The nude meal was filmed in June; Fraser tweeted out his plans, noting the shoot was done guerrilla-style:

Not surprisingly, considering his body of work (pun very much intended), Fraser often finds himself reminding the public his eroticism isn’t just for titillation:

Come on Brent! I’ve seen your live performances before, and I am a fan of your work, but this is a blatant reproduction of Lars Von Trier and Jørgen Leth’s “The Five Obstructions”.

Leth made the film “A perfect Human” (1967) and in 2004 the pair remade Leth’s film with certain constraints, and one of them was eating a lavish dinner in a slum. Give credit where credit is due, but otherwise, great work.

  • Satisha King

WTF is this supposed to even represent?

  • MMaitland

    “erotic” isn’t a noun, it’s an adjective

  • Melissa Noyes

He’s got a nice body, glad he shared it with us!

  • Melissa Noyes

The twit at the end ‘why are you eating steak in front of starving people?’ Does she share every meal she eats?

  • ABetterWorld

I get it. He’s a “dick” for enjoying a scrumptious meal in front of the down and outs. Whatever, I guess you’re an artist BRF, anyways more tomatoes and hot peppers on my 6 inch Ciabata, dude.

  • Not impressed…..

I can shit in my hand and call it art but it doesn’t mean it’s art…

  • falconer68

Keep up the good Work…Love the Arts

  • Vanessa

i’m just BSing when i say this, but i think it’s supposed to represent the attention drawn to food for a hungry person. Non-hungry people pay attention due to his nudity, while hungry people pay attention due to the food. If my interpretation is right, it’s a great show of Maslow’s hierarchy.

  • kb

I also see a slight slap in the face to gentrification trend that seems to be growing evermore popular down in the gastown area

  • Ric Bannow

I have f ollowed Brent Ray Fraser and his “art” for years and have always enjoyed his expression of self and Erotica. I was a social worker on the DTES for 16 years.. this event was fully misplaced … might have been more approritate if Mr Fraser moved his event to the west side.. where people are fed fully.. Brent you really messed up on this one.. it shows you as fully naked and heartless and fully “Kardasian” and not much art.. and if you only did this to get some reaction instead of emotion then you missed out..

  • Ric bannow

Sad to say Vennessa that would have went over the heads of the starving down on the dtes.. nice point but lost on most going by..

  • Mike

Tiny penis on this white dude.

  • Phil

Perhaps to point out that we are all, metaphorically, eating steak in front of starving people

  • Brie

Okay but I saw a woman on Burrard and Hastings 2 Saturdays ago with nothing but a shirt on. I saw much more than I would have liked to… is that “art” too?

  • kevin mcpherson eckhoff

As the trace of a live installation, this piece would have proven more compelling if the camera continuously panned across the inadvertent spectators, perhaps occasionally over BRF’s shoulder, but never revealing the meal nor “identity” of the “consumer” … drats.

  • kevin

    thanks for the additional context!

  • Joey

Don’t say things you know nothing about. This guy is/was a porn star, and trust me, he has a HUGE, THICK, cock.

  • Satisha King

I think I understand it now, It’s supposed to signify the fact that Vancouver has wealthy rich people and yet so many poor and starving people at the same time… Why he is naked I still don’t know, Perhaps it’s supposed to “expose” the rich? Literally? LOL… I don’t know I would like to hear what the artist has to say about it.

  • Satisha King

    didn’t he reject doing porn???

  • Vanessa

I totally agree. It’s unfortunate that this piece of art that I assume is meant to express sympathy for the starving people comes across as mockery or an insult.

  • Joey Tai

So he says. I’ll have to dig through some old VHS tapes.
