It’s not one of the stereotypical Canadian animals, a list that includes the beaver, goose, whale and moose. But it likely will not become one of the most famous mascots in major international sporting event history either.

Last month, organizers of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 unveiled the official mascot of the month-long tournament – a young female snowy owl (great white owl) named Shuéme.

The bird holds a significant symbol throughout Canada’s history and embodies the spirit that organizers hope to achieve for the event. Her name is inspired by the French word for owl (chouette), which pays tribute to bilingualism and Canada as an inclusive, multicultural country.

Shuéme’s colours symbolize peace and fair play, while her hair exudes self-confidence and pride. Her contours also denote the ability to grace under pressure and her wings and tail provide the precise control and agility required for the game.

“Shuéme is a symbol for Canada and we are absolutely thrilled to introduce her to Canadians and the many fans of the women’s game around the world,” said Peter Montopoli, Chief Executive Officer for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 National Organising Committee. “A considerable amount of thought went into creating a character that children will adore, and that represents Canadians and the spirit of Canada from coast to coast.”

Earlier this month, just before the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Canadian organizers also unveiled the official poster of the tournament.

The Women’s World Cup is FIFA’s second largest tournament and will run from June 6 to July 5, 2015 in six Canadian cities. Twenty-six national teams, including the Canadian national women’s team, will compete for the trophy.

Vancouver’s BC Place Stadium will play a vital role as it is slated to host eight matches and the championship final.
