Chinatown fest

The Vancouver Chinatown Festival at the 100 block of Keefer Street and 500 block of Columbia Street in Vancouver’s historic Chinatown is the largest summer multicultural event that attracts close to 60,000 people. Featuring over 300 energetic volunteers to help deliver a dynamic and exciting two day festival on August 9 and 10.

This year’s festival theme is healthy and sporty living to echo the active lifestyles of Vancouverites. Some highlights include traditional arts and crafts from around the world, walking tours that feature the food and history of Chinatown, an open-air market filled with exotic goods, multicultural stage performances, and fun and games for kids of all ages. The finalists of the Youth Talent Showdown and Young Star Challenge will be competing at the Main Stage on August 9 and 10.

There will also be an Anime Fashion Showdown, Bboys battle, DJs and more on Saturday night’s Streetfest. The Chinatown Mascot, Van Van will also be celebrating his fourth birthday.

An array of fun-filled activities will be lined up at the Festival:

“Healthy and Sporty Living” theme activities

Explore the theme area this year and explore the many ways you can stay healthy this year through our exciting vendors and demonstrations. This year there will also be an exciting new Dim Sum Mascot Race this year, featuring Van Van and many other mascots. There will also be a ping pong activity zone, where you can test your skills at the open tournament, have some fun at the free-to-play table, or learn the basics from the masters. There will also be two feature theme stages for performances, including:

  • Double Dutch jump rope
  • Martial Arts performances
  • Live music
  • Yoga demos
  • Fitness demos
  • Magic shows

Multicultural Stage Performances – August 9th and 10th, noon – 6pm

• TD Youth Talent Showdown Finals
• Young Star Challenge Finals

Kids Corner – August 9th and 10th, 12:00 noon – 5:00 pm

A host of fun activities for the kids or the kid in you. This year’s theme will feature challenging games to test your skills, there will be = carnival games, face painting, and balloon twisting. Bring your kids for a great time on 500 block Columbia Street.

Cultural Corner

Discover traditional arts and crafts from cultures around the world.

Folk Art Demonstrations – August 9th and 10th, 12:00 noon – 5:00 pm

Take-home Korean pottery, Indian Henna body art, chopstick learning games, Chinese calligraphy demonstrations, Chinese fish bowl, and much more!

Historical Chinatown Heritage and Food Tasting Tour – August 9th and 10th, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Register at the Walking Tour info booths on site. You will visit heritage buildings and get to sample Vancouver Chinatown’s favorite foods. Each tour lasts about 30 – 45 minutes and begins at the Chinese Monument Square every half hour. (Registration Fee – $5 each)

StreetFest – Saturday, August 9th, 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Streetfest will partner up with Anime Revolution to organize the biggest Anime Fashion Showdown in the neighborhood. After the fashion showdown, professional DJs will spin the latest tunes while the Bboys battle it out on the stage. There will also be a wide range of activities for festival attendees including fun games, booths, carnival foods, to name a few.

Day Market

Day Market is located at 100 block of Keefer Street. The Day Market will contain a wide variety of merchandises and food from different cultures.

Wheel of Fortune

Try your luck with the wheel of fortune at any info booth with a purchase receipt of $10 or more at any Chinatown businesses during the Festival.

The Golden Dumpling Cookoff and Derby – Sunday, August 10th, 12:00pm – 5:00pm

Chinatown Festival will collaborate this year with Bao Bei Chinese Brasserie with their Golden Dumpling Cookoff and Derby. Purchase a tasting ticket to sample and rate the unique dumplings created by Vancouver’s local restaurants in the Dumpling Cookoff, or register for the Dumpling Derby to outeat your competitors.

TD Youth Talent Showdown 2014 Finals

On August 10 the top finalists will compete at the main stage for the Top Three Awards in front of a live audience.

Young Star Challenge Finals

Selected Young Star finalists will be competing on the main stage for the Top Three Awards.
