In case you haven’t heard, Vancouver’s burgeoning Hastings Sunrise neighborhood, now commonly known as the East Village, is home to some of our city’s hippest spots to grab some eats and drinks. We call this area home, and we’ll admit we are a bit spoiled when it comes to dine out options.
So if the idea of dining in East Vancouver has you reaching for your passport and packing a night bag, think again. We’ve rounded up some of the best of the best that are totally worth venturing out for – and worse case scenario, you could always crash at our place.
Owners Tony Marzo and Sachi Iwamoto have made a lasting impression on the neighborhood, not only with their service and smiles but for Chef Tony’s creative, inspiring and drool-worthy food. We are regular customers here and have no problem ordering through the whole menu with friends. Since Kessel & March has opened, they’ve begun collaborating with local breweries and distilleries in the area to create drink pairing dinners, and on Wednesdays they hold family style dinners serving a specific protein like quail, alongside other delicious dishes to please your palate for the evening. They also do brunch on weekends, with fresh pastries all made onsite.

Just a stone’s throw from Kessel & March is a new-ish distillery named Odd Society Spirits, who have been making quite a splash since opening late last year. Open from Thursday to Sunday with no reservations needed, Odd Society offer tastings and tours which are complimentary. This small-batch craft distillery currently offers two spirits, including East Van Vodka, made with 100% malted barely from Prince George, and Creme De Cassis, made with BC grown blackcurrants. Their long-awaited third spirit Wallflower is ready for release on June 28th, this spirit has a bold gin with flowery hints of lavender, elderflower and rose, and a spicy hint of black pepper.

A bit of a dark horse in the East Village neighborhood, this place has quickly has become a “go to” place for low-key eats and cheap drinks. The decor alone will make you scratch your head, and if you visit the bathroom you’ll be sure to form some type of opinion about the cat face cut-outs replacing faces of supermodels and other old magazines from the past. Beyond the wild decor though, Jackalopes Neighborhood Dive pumps out delicious Southern inspired dishes from a kitchen the size of a broom closet. Slow cooked brisket beef deep, cheddar jalapeno fritters, BBQ pulled pork sliders, and authentic corn bread are all on the menu. You may as well just order one of everything, and thank us later.

With the charming decor and feel of a Victorian London Train Station filled with the aroma of Stumptown Coffee Roaster beans, Platform 7 Coffee use a manual La Marzocco Strada machine to pump out some of the best espresso beverages in town. Offering up locally source baked goods like pies from Jenell aka The Pie Hole, lots of gluten-free options, as well as their own baked goods and tailor-made sandwiches made in-house.

Since opening in February, Basho Cafe has become extremely popular with locals and non-locals alike, curious to try their inspired Japanese cafe fare. Think mochi brownies, mini gomai cookies and the most perfect matcha latte ever — not to mention ridiculously good lunch bowls, all made fresh to order. With a particular charm that’s hard to deny, Basho will easily become your new favorite after just one visit.

Although we usually just hit them up for Growler fills, Parallel 49 must be given props where props are due. With all of the new breweries that have popped up in the past twelve months, these guys are still our go-to choice for fresh craft beer at cheap prices. Their lounge is a great spot to chill with friends and have a couple flights ($4 each), and the servers are always friendly and welcoming.
