The FIFA World Cup may will be coming to a close this week, but international quidditch competition is just getting started!

Based on the magical sport from Harry Potter, the 2014 Quidditch Global Games will be held at the Lake West Sports Complex West in Burnaby on Saturday, July 19.

120 players from seven international real-life quidditch teams and three continents, representing the USA, Canada, Mexico, UK, France, Belgium and Australia, will all be competing for the title of global champion.

Real-life quidditch has swept the globe as an intense, co-ed full contact adaptation, with more than 200 official teams, 4,000 players, and hundreds of thousands of fans around the world.

The sport is played with seven active players on each team: three chasers who attempt to move, pass, or score with the quaffle (a volleyball) by shooting it through their opponents three hoops, two players who hurl bludgers (dodgeballs) to temporarily knock opposing players out of the game, a keeper to defend the hoops, and a seeker on each team to chase the snitch, a velcro tail attached to the shorts of a very swift runner dressed in yellow.

The game ends when the snitch is caught, and the winning team earns an extra 30 points, equivalent to three goals.

The Global Games event is free and open to the public, with food and beverage concessions, bathrooms, and water fountains available onsite. Games will run on Field #1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
