If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. Osoyoos is hitting the ground running with the Desert Live Music Festival, and the lineup might just make you want to skip town to a sunnier destination.
Osoyoos will rock the South Okanagan, June 27 to July 1, during the first ever Desert Live Music Festival jointly presented by Eastlink and the Town of Osoyoos. A free, all-ages event, Desert Live will happen right on the lakefront at Gyro Beach.
The musical lineup will feature rock, reggae, funk, soul, blues and more. The five-day festival will showcase a talented, all-Canadian lineup, including:
- No Sinner
- Redeye Empire
- Shawn Hook
- Tasman Jude
- Yukon Blonde
Vancity Buzz interviewed Mike Campol, Chair of the Music Festival Committee for Desert Live, to find out more about this year’s festivities.
1) What is the history of the Desert Live Music Festival?
As this is our first year, our plan is to make history. There was strong support in the community to build a music festival that could sustain itself for many years to come. We feel that this location will provide one of the most amazing backdrops imaginable for such an event.
2) Tell me a little about yourself! How did you get involved?
I moved to Osoyoos from Toronto three years ago and it was love at first sight. My professional background in hospitality includes owning and operating a live music venue. I have a passion for music of all different genres and have always been drawn to live music venues as a form of entertainment.
3) Throughout the years, what have you noticed about the state of music in Osoyoos?
Over my short time here, I’ve noticed that the community loves to attend events, and while there are many events centered around both wine and our natural vegetation, I believe arts and culture-related events could use a boost, which is why I’m so excited to attend and be a part of Desert Live.
4) What performances are you most excited about in this year’s lineup?
The beauty of Desert Live is that it’s a multi-genre event, with rock, blues, reggae and more on offer, so there really is something for everyone. But given the beach setting, I’m particularly looking forward to Redeye Empire and Tasman Jude, which both have a reggae flavour.
5) Anything special Vancouverites coming to the festival should know?
Yes, the warm lake, cold beer and amazing Canadian entertainment set against the most incredible backdrop in the country. Plus, Desert Live coincides with Osoyoos’ annual Canada Day celebration, Cherry Fiesta on July 1, culminating with the largest Canada Day fireworks display in Western Canada. It will be an action-packed five days!
