Victoria Harbour’s Fairmont Empress Hotel has been purchased by Nat Bosa, and his wife Flora, of Bosa Development.

The 477 guestroom, 1908-built hotel was acquired from Ivanhoé Cambridge, a subsidiary of Quebec pension fund Caisse de dépôt et placement.

In late-May, the pension fund announced that it would be exiting the hotel operations business and by selling its hotel properties. This included other iconic, historic hotels such as the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver and Toronto’s Fairmont Royal York, and other properties in other cities that are also operated by the Fairmont chain.

The ivy-clad historic landmark, named after Queen Victoria, was designed by Francis Mawson Rattenbury an English architect who also designed the BC Legislative buildings, The Crystal Garden, and Vancouver Art Gallery.

“We are thrilled at the opportunity to purchase this heritage building. The hotel is part of the fabric of the community and we look forward to welcoming the residents of Victoria, as well as showcasing it to past and future guests,” said Nat Bosa and his wife Flora.

“This is the city’s most elegant retreat, home to royalty and Hollywood stars, and we are honoured to be part of this ongoing legend. It is business as usual for guests and employees as Fairmont Hotels & Resorts will continue its long term management and we look forward to working with them to celebrate the hotel’s rich history.”

The terms of the transaction with the Bosa family were not disclosed. Meanwhile, the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver property is still for sale.
