Shooting outside Science World, suspect apprehended

Science World Shooting

Vancouver Police are responding to a second incident involving gun shots in the False Creek area.

The second shooting occurred outside of Science World shortly after the 11:30 a.m. Yaletown attack at the Starbucks near Urban Fare. One man was severely injured and rushed to hospital but is now in stable condition.

According to witnesses, police that happened to be nearby responded by exchanging gun fire with the 52-year-old male suspect. He then fled the first scene by riding a bicycle on the seawall while being chased by police who were also on bicycles.

Police officers were waiting for the suspect at the end of False Creek near Science World. A gunfight began, resulting in minor injuries to a police officer and severe injuries to the suspect after he was hit by a bullet.

The suspect is in custody and it is believed that there are no suspects outstanding. He underwent surgery at hospital and is now in stable condition.

Science World was in lockdown with 50 children, teachers and staff still inside. It will be closed for the rest of the day to support police investigations. Approximately two dozen police vehicles, dozens of officers and a police helicopter responded to the scene.

One visitor inside the museum told Vancity Buzz that they were asked to lay down flat on the floor throughout the duration of the incident.

The identity of the suspect is not known; police have not released any further information at this time.
