Last minute changes were made yesterday for several provincial exams that are scheduled for today.

The B.C. Ministry of Education announced that students writing the provincial exams for English 10 and Social Studies 11 will complete a shorter version of the test.

Both essay questions have been taken out of the Social Studies 11 exam while one essay question has been removed from English 10 exam, leaving students with one remaining essay question to complete.

Students are still required to complete the multiple choice sections for their exams. Exam grades will be based on the reduced set of questions, which could put some students in a disadvantage if they have difficulty with multiple choice.

Grade 12 provincial exams and final grades are not affected as the provincial Labour Relations Board has ruled them as an ‘essential service’.

Due to the full-scale teachers’ strike, exams that are not covered by the ‘essential service’ ruling will be evaluated by school administrators.

The decision to remove certain written response questions was made because not all administrators have the required expertise with the subjects at hand. Teachers are normally responsible for grading the written sections of the exams.

“Based on concerns raised by a number of Superintendents related to quality and validity of the marking for Social Studies 11 and English 10, the decision has been taken to alter the sections that students will be responsible for completing related to these two exams,” said a letter sent to Superintendents across B.C. “This decision was taken related to these two exams because they account for 65,000 of the 70,000 locally marked exams this exam session.”

Students will be given the option to re-write any provincial exam within a one-year period. In addition, during the November 2014 exam session, students will be given the opportunity to complete any exam section not offered this month.
