Yesterday morning, a woman allegedly threw a drink at a child in a stroller while riding the No. 502 bus from Aldergrove to Surrey.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:20 a.m. on Fraser Highway near the Langley Bypass, next to Target.
“The investigation suggests that… a female passenger and the bus driver began arguing over non-payment of the fare,” said the RCMP in a statement. “The woman was using profane language causing the complainant along with other passengers to ask her to stop swearing. There were several children on the bus in addition to the complainant’s own three children.”
The suspect then threatened to kill the mother and her children before throwing a drink at the youngest child that was barely a year old.
It devolved into chaos when the mother came to her child’s defence and began to attack the woman (seen in the video below). The bus driver then asked both women to disembark the bus.
“The bus driver just told them ‘you get off using this door and you get off using the other,'” a witness told Vancity Buzz. “When the lady who instigated the incident didn’t want to get off, the bus driver seemed fine with that but the others around on the bus were not. They told her repeatedly to get off until she did.”
After the bus drove away and was out of view, the woman allegedly ran after the mother, produced a knife and attempted to stab her. In the process, the suspect knocked over the 4-year-old daughter and kicked her 2-year-old daughter in the back.
The bus was relatively full at the time with many elderly passengers on board and police were quickly alerted to the scene.
A Surrey RCMP officer recognized the description over the police broadcast as someone he had dealings with in the past. A 43-year-old was swiftly arrested at her residence by 10:40 a.m.
She was held in custody overnight and taken to appear in Provincial Court this afternoon. Police have recommended various Assault, Assault with a Weapon and Uttering Threats charges to Crown Counsel for their consideration.
