Vancouver Chinatown Night Market cancelled for 2014

Vancouver Chinatown Night Market

The Vancouver Chinatown Night Market will not be making a return for summer 2014 after last year’s major attempts to revitalize the annual event.

According to several sources, the weekend night market will not be returning for what would be its 20th year in the streets of Vancouver’s historic Chinatown. It typically opens in mid-May of each year.

The night market’s social media channels have been quiet since September 2013 and the website still retains event information from last summer.

Event organizers say the reason for cancellation lies with the amount of construction that is scheduled to occur at the venue this summer.

In recent years, the night market has fallen into hard times due to stiff competition from the two large Richmond night markets at Vulcan Way and near River Rock Casino. Crowds and merchants at the Chinatown location have become relatively sparse with the Richmond destinations evolving into regional draws.

The Chinatown night market once stretched over a distance of four blocks and was seen as a way to bring business to the troubled Chinatown neighbourhood. The event was downsized to just a two block long event in its final years.
