Construction is underway on the University of British Columbia’s new Point Grey campus Alumni Centre.

Earlier today, the university revealed plans for the new $18.5-million facility, named after prominent local business leader and philanthropist Robert H. Lee in honour of his contributions to the institution as a former Board of Governor, University Chancellor and Chairman of UBC Properties Trust.

The new building will be located at the heart of campus on the northeast corner of University Boulevard and East Mall, adjacent to the new Student Union Building currently being built, and will serve as a resource centre for UBC’s 300,000 alumni.

“The Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre will become the heart of campus,” says UBC President Stephen Toope. “When we first imagined its creation, Bob was the obvious person to name it after. He brings people together and we thought that was the perfect symbol for the alumni centre.”

The 12,700 square foot building was designed by Vancouver’s Hughes Condon Marler Architects and Toronto’s Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg. It will feature:

  • A new centre for innovation that will be the home for entrepreneurship@UBC
  • Two multi-purpose classrooms designed for academic and intellectual programming for alumni
  • High-tech boardrooms for the UBC Board of Governors and the Alumni Association Board of Directors
  • A 300-person celebration space for alumni and community events
  • Interactive storytelling elements will show the global impact of UBC alumni and donors
  • A café and library on the main floor for informal networking

Funding for the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre is made possible by the school’s administration, Alumni UBC, and ‘Start An Evolution’ – an ambitious fundraising campaign to raise $1.5-billion for a host of student, development, research, community and alumni engagement projects.
