Make it in Strathcona: Where independent businesses go to thrive

Thousands of businesses have planted their roots in historic Strathcona. Over 500 businesses populate the area, making it one of the most stable and celebrated Vancouver communities, where independent businesses come to thrive.

Big names like Aritzia and Herschel Supply Co. share their headquarters with local businesses like JJ Bean and Endeavor Snowboards, who design vibrantly patterned boards and perform test runs on Grouse Mountain. Hootsuite got its start here too – whilst culinary hotspots Railtown Cafe and Catering and Ask for Luigi are popping up everywhere. And among all these start-ups and fresh ventures, there’s a rich history of commercial endeavors dating back to the mid-1800s.

Strathcona is one of the most stable commercial districts in Canada. The area currently boasts over 500 businesses across different sectors including manufacturing, retail, dining, creative and much more.

Businesses are supported by the Strathcona Business Improvement Association that provides advocacy, promotion, area beautification, sustainability programming, and safety and security measures.

With an increasingly interconnected and supportive business network, thousands have chosen Strathcona as the place to successfully grow their business.

“For being so central in this metropolitan area, Strathcona really has a neighbourhood feel,” said Rick Havlak, owner of Homesteader’s Emporium. “Regulars who live or work around the corner are very supportive – they’re generally delighted to see an independent store operating here. People know each other, say hello on the streets, and care about the neighbourhood.”
