A farmers’ market is a great place to buy healthy, fresh and locally grown produce. It’s also an opportunity to talk directly to farmers, and the reassurance that you will be eating nutritious and ‘ethically sourced’ food.

Famers’ market also means that 100 per cent of the retail price stays and support those who work in the local economy. By supporting local farmers, you are also supporting and safeguarding B.C.’s agricultural land for future generations.

The fresh produce sold at BC farmers’ markets usually travels less that 300 km to get to you. Compare this to the average North American meal, which travels 2,400 km to get from field to plate and contains ingredients from 5 countries in addition to our own. All that transportation results in a lot of fossil fuels being burned, which contributes, to air pollution, acid rain and climate change.

Farmers’ markets are returning to Vancouver this spring/summer/fall season – bigger and better than ever before. Here are a few of the top weekly farmers’ markets to go to in Vancouver:

Trout Lake Farmers Market – Saturdays

This market was established in 1995 and features a great selection of organic and conventionally grown produce and nursery items as well as meat, cheese, seafood and prepared goods of all sorts.

Enjoy entertainment by acoustic musicians, and facepainting or balloon animals for kids from our resident balloon sculptor. On-site hot food and coffee is also available. Make a day of it and visit the beautiful Trout Lake park complete with an off-leash dog park and beach with picnic area. Please walk, bike or take transit to the market as parking in the neighbourhood is limited.

Date: Saturdays only – May 10 – October 18, 2014
Time: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each week
Location: North Parking Lot of John Hendry Park at Trout Lake
Between Templeton and Lakewood south of the 13th Avenue Alley
Please note: There is no parking in the North Lot and no parking on 13th Avenue. Please park away from the area & walk in. Or better yet: walk, cycle or take transit if you can!

Kitsilano Farmers Market – Sundays

Each week the parking lot of Kits Community Centre fills with organic and conventional product, meat, cheese, seafood and plants as well as tasty baked goods, beautiful crafts and musical entertainment by local musicians.

Kids can enjoy the playground and waterpark nearby and parents will find the best selection of organic produce around. Hot coffee and hot food available on site each week. Bike valet every week so please consider cycling or walking to the market if you can!

Date: Sundays only – May 11 – October 19, 2014
Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each week
Location: 2690 Larch Street at 10th Avenue, Parking Lot of Kitsilano Community Centre

West End Farmers Market – Saturdays

Located in the heart of Vancouver’s busy West End, this laid-back Saturday market looks onto beautiful Nelson Park and adjacent community gardens. Weekly, West Enders can enjoy the best in local produce, prepared foods and crafts. Hot food and coffee on-site as well. Take the dog for a walk and enjoy a market in your urban backyard!

Date: Saturdays only – May 31 – October 18, 2014
Time: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each week
Location: 1100 Block of Comox Street across from Nelson Park at Mole Hill

Main Street Station Farmers Market – Wednesdays

Located at the bustling commuter intersection at Main and Terminal, Main Street Station market returns for it’s 5th season this year. Access by bus and Skytrain is exceptional at this very central location. The market vendors will line up on the east side of Thornton Park on the sidewalk along Station Street. There is ample room for pedestrians to walk along the sidewalk or detour into the park if they wish.

You can expect to find a great selection of vendors at this market – everything from produce to meat and cheese, baking and more! Have dinner at the market as we’ll be offering hot food on-site too. Stick around for a chef demonstration or relax in the park on a warm summer evening.

Location: 1100 Block Station Street along Thornton Park across from the VIA Rail Station and near the Main St Skytrain Station

Kerrisdale Village Farmers Market – Saturdays

Vancouver Farmers Markets returns to Kerrisdale Village this season for 18 weeks of local food fun in the heart of one of Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhoods. In the shadow of Point Grey High School and just up the street from Kerrisdale Arena, the farmers market will feature over 40 vendors selling farm produce, prepared foods and craft items from across BC.

The market is situated on East Boulevard between 37th and 41st Avenues and there is ample street parking and close access to bus nearby. Stop by after your walk around the track or if you’re shopping at the boutiques along 41st Avenue.

Date: Saturdays only – June 14 to October 11, 2014
Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each week
Location: East Boulevard between 37th and 41st Avenue – near Kerrisdale Arena

Mt Pleasant Farmers Market – Sundays

Entering its second season, the Mount Pleasant market will feature the same local produce, baked goods, and craft items you’ve come to know and love from other markets across Vancouver. Located on the paved play area between Mt. Pleasant Elementary and the now virally famous Dude Chilling Park, enjoy the 22 vendors that set up shop every sunday between 10am and 2pm.

Date: Sundays only – June 15 to October 12, 2014
Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each week
Location: Guelph Street between 7th and 8th Avenues, on the paved play area between Mt. Pleasant Elementary and Guelph Park.

Yaletown Farmers Market – Thursdays

Last season this downtown market was so popular it was extended all the way to December 19th! Hoping to continue its success, the Yaletown market is back on Mainland Street between Helmcken and Davie, and is offering marketgoers fresh produce, artisan foods and baking, as well as a limited selection of non-food merchandise. Come down between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursday’s and spend your afternoon browsing fresh fruits, crunchy vegetables and luscious herbs that will surely inspire tasty menus and summer dining.

Date: Thursdays only – May 1 to October 2, 2014
Time: 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. each week
Location: Mainland Street between Davie and Helmcken at the Yaletown-Roundhouse Canada Line Stop.

Oak Street Farmers’ Market – Wednesdays

This market specializes in Certified Organic fresh produce, meat and eggs, and has a fantastic array of local craftspeople, artisans, prepared foods and live music. This will be the market’s fourth season.

Date: Wednesdays only – June 4 to October 30, 2014
Time: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. each week
Location: Unitarian Church parking lot (Oak Street and 49th Avenue)

River District Vancouver Farmers’ Market – Saturdays

The market hosts a wide variety of local farmers, bakers and artisans. It offers the freshest selection of items on the weekly grocery list, and also runs children’s crafts and live entertainment. The area includes a waterfront playground and pier, as well as the very popular Romer’s Burger Bar.

Location: Kerr Street and East Kent Avenue
