That time of year has come, final exams are upon us and soon the sun will be beckoning us outdoors and away from our studies. Along with exams come long hours reviewing notes and fine tuning our skills, potentially all night long.

Keep your brain fueled and your attention piqued with these suggestions for coffee shops and cafes open all night to nourish your mind and your body. Let the studying begin!

1. Breka Bakery & Cafe

A bakery and coffee shop with a selection of sandwiches and baked goods. Cinnamon buns hot from the oven and chocolate mousse cake to stimulate your senses. The breakfast wrap is inexpensive and delicious as is the Montreal smoked meat sandwich, allow them to grill it and serve with a cool tangy sliced pickle.

  • East Vancouver: 6533 Fraser Street, Vancouver. Phone: 604.325.6612
  • Downtown Vancouver 1: 818 Bute Street, Vancouver. Phone: 604.620.8200

Word on the street is that they have a number of other locations that have opened downtown, but the quality is not as good as the one on Fraser Street.

Free WiFi, limited seating.

2. Calhoun’s Bakery Cafe

Open and spacious and a hit with UBC students, Calhoun’s offers tons of seating and home cooked comfort foods. With their smaller tables, ideal for seating one or two people, and access to outlets for laptops, it would almost appear as if Calhoun’s was set up with students in mind.

Fresh brewed espresso all night long paired with a bowl of chicken curry or shepherds pie and you have yourself a recipe for a comfortable study nook ideal for facilitating studying.

Free WiFi with purchase (3 hour expiry) and ample seating.

3. The Naam

Proof that eating vegetarian, even at 4am, doesn’t have to be boring and flavorless. This is not just tossed salad, the Naam is a Kitsilano legend with it’s miso gravy and massive portions.

Often overflowing on weekends with post party burnouts looking for some eats, snagging a table for some vegan dessert and some time to read is very doable. With their live music every night from 7-10pm, consider it a refuge from the traditional coffee shop for some serious vegetarian cuisine.

4. Duffin’s Donuts

Not only does it serve some of Vancouver’s best donuts, it offers a very wide a variety of food to provide you with the needed energy to study . Their steak sandwich with avocado is among their best sellers, and they even have crispy fried chicken for those who are looking for a savoury treat.

What else do they have? Chinese, Mexican, and Vietnamese food; over a dozen types of subs; sandwiches; burgers; poutine; 24 flavours of soft ice cream; and so much more…
