Nearly six years ago the BC Cancer Foundation held their first Ride to Conquer Cancer event, which is a bicycle ride from Vancouver to Seattle. It may sound like a daunting ride, but remember so is cancer.
I climbed on the saddle that first year and 260km’s later, I arrived at the University of Washington campus (which was the finish line that first year.) After that first ride, I decided to chat up another fellow rider, Jimi Brockett and we combined forces to make ‘Team Baggy Pants’. In a sad turn of events, Brockett’s son, Ryder, who was only five-years old passed away from inoperable brain cancer. Along with Ryder, another member of our team’s son, also Ryder passed away — so the team was renamed to ‘Riders for Ryders’.
The team has raised over $1.6 million dollars for cancer research since the amalgamation and one of the big fundraising events of the year is a night Jimi likes to call ‘Laughstrong’.
This Saturday night, from Ceili’s Irish Pub on W. 7th Ave, the fourth annual Laughstrong event will be put on.
“Fighting cancer and raising funds for cancer research doesn’t always need to be so serious,” said Brockett. “It’s a theme we thrive on for this event. LAUGHSTRONG is a great evening of laughter, great food, drinks and amazing people and over the past 3 years has raised over $37,000. Come help us break $50,000 and have a great laugh doing it www.laughstrong.ca”
For just $33 you will get an amazing evening of entertainment. Four hilarious comedians will grace the stage — Art Factora, Patrick Maliha, Ryan Lachance & Kevin Webb. If that wasn’t enough, you get a free drink, appetizer and entry for door prizes as well. There will be food and drink specials throughout the evening, where 33% of the cost will be donated directly back to the fundraiser.
On top of the door prizes, there are over $10,000 worth of raffle and silent auction prizes to be won, including martial arts memberships, White Caps tickets, hotel packages, Michael Buble tickets and more.
