Expect heavier than normal traffic in Kits and the southern end of downtown Vancouver during the morning hours this weekend because the Burrard Bridge and Burrard Street will be closed from 1st Avenue to Pacific Boulevard from 3:00am to noon.
Cornwall Avenue will be closed all day Friday and Saturday between Burrard and Cypress.
The Burrard Bridge will re-open in the afternoons with one lane south and two lanes northbound.
Instead, please use alternate routes such as the Granville Bridge and the Cambie Street Bridge via Howe Street and Hornby Street.
On Sunday, all day, the Burrard Bridge will operate with one lane south and two lanes north. Cornwall and Burrard will be open in its final configuration.
City staff will monitor impacts throughout the weekend. Traffic Authority staff will be dispersed at multiple sites to help direct motorists. Transit buses will be detoured from Cornwall to 4th Avenue. Access to the bridge will be maintained for pedestrians and cyclists throughout the weekend.
Minimizing the length of overall disruption
Closures over Easter weekend will allow paving at Burrard and Cornwall, and avoid interfering with two important City-wide events – the Sun Run and the BMO Marathon – scheduled over the following two weekends.
The closure is scheduled at a time when there is minimal traffic flow over the Burrard Bridge.
Vital reconstruction work continues on the 81-year-old Burrard Bridge. This includes replacing expansion joints on the bridge which unfortunately is very disruptive to traffic. This work will continue until July.
This is the last major disruptive work that needs to be done at the Burrard and Cornwall intersection. Paving is weather dependent and the long weekend provides some contingency if there is heavy rain.
