Marutama Ramen - The Food Gays-6

Vancouver’s budding Ramen scene has developed over the past decade from non-existant to semi-tolerable. There are a smattering of holes in the wall around the city, but it seems the core selection are still in the West End. For some strange reason unbeknownst to us, both Robson and Denman streets are absolute hubs for those seeking the illustrious and traditional Japanese dish, and this month we’ve rounded up what we think are the very few worth standing in line for.

Marutama Ra-men

Tucked away on Bidwell just off Robson, Marutama Ra-men is often less busy than its competitors, but provides an authentic experience which salutes you right when you walk through the door. With only chicken broth on their menu, Marutama is really all about the toppings, with everything from perfectly soft-boiled Tamago, Ebi and Tan Men available for you to choose from.

Hida Takayama Ramen

Likely one of Vancouver’s best kept secrets, Hida Takayama Ramen is a no-frills experience for ramen purists. Located inside the Robson Square Market, this little gem is the only ramen restaurant in the city who makes their noodles in house with premium grade ramen flour imported from Japan. Their broth takes three days to prepare, and contains no MSG. The chashu here is generously portioned, super delicious and tender. What’s more, you can choose from a small, medium or large size noodle portion at no extra cost. With over ten options available on their menu, including the super rich White Sesame Ramen, there’s definitely something for everyone here.

Motomachi Shokudo Ramen

If you’ve never tried the Bamboo-Charcoal Miso Ramen from Motomachi Shokudo, that alone is worth the visit. The deep black color of the broth might look scary, but we assure you its taste is anything but. While we did find the broth at Motomachi to be a little on the oily side, it’s still a solid choice to squash those afternoon hunger pangs if you’re craving a quick bowl. Beware though, this place opens right at noon and tends to fill up fast.
