This pair of Bald Eagles return each year to Strathcona Park in Vancouver to rebuild their nest to lay their eggs.
In this video by Bruce Causier, the eagle grasps the branch then uses its weight to break it off the tree. It then returns to the nest to make the necessary repairs.
Metro Vancouver has a healthy Bald Eagle population for a major urban area. However, the largest local cluster is located in Brackendale near Squamish where as many as 1,000 of the birds were recently counted.
Some areas, including Brackendale, have been facing dwindling numbers due to weak salmon runs in local rivers and streams. It is leading some birds to either scavenge garbage to survive or face starvation.
