In addition to car share and Vancouver’s future bike share, you can have a part-time dog with Part Time Pooch – Vancouver’s dog sharing program.

Part Time Pooch, an idea started by Vancouverite Gavin Flett, allows busy individuals to take care of a dog on a part time basis.

Nowadays, people have to work late, they have travel plans, and sometimes life happens. Every once in awhile we all could use some help to look after the ones we love. That need for help was the catalyst for Part Time Pooch. The service connects those who want dogs on a part-time basis with those who have dogs and are open to sharing.

The aim of the site is to help dog owners and dog lovers connect. They want you to find a great home for your pet or the right pooch to keep you company but above all, they want to connect you. It’s a new relationship for your four-legged friend, but also a new connection for you.

The concept is simple: dog lovers provide their care for the puppy for free and do not have to pay to be members – only dog owners will pay a monthly fee. Part Time Pooch membership currently sits at nearly 48.

To expand his business he needs financial backing. This coming fall, Flett will appear on an episode of CBC’s Dragons’ Den to present his idea of Part Time Pooch to five Canadian business moguls. He is hoping he can persuade them to invest in his idea.

For those who yearn for the company of cats instead of dogs, a Cat Café (or Catfé) will be opening in Vancouver later this year. Patrons can enjoy food and beverages while enjoying the company of cats.

Catfé’s felions will be from local animal shelters as a way to help them find permanent homes and loving families.
