After a sold-out run of its 2012 creation L’orchestre d’Hommes-Orchestres Performs Tom Waits, the Quebec music-theatre collective returns to The Cultch, this time dipping into the repertoire of Kurt Weill. From Berlin cabaret and Parisian nostalgia to New York’s Broadway, this 8-piece orchestra retraces the path of the musician in exile with rare instruments and music-objects, conjuring Weill’s dramatic and musical world and the best and worst of the human condition.

With Cabaret Brise-Jour, LODHO’s intention is not to interpret any specific opera by Kurt Weill in its entirety. On the contrary, it has chosen a variety of songs from his corpus to serve as the basis for a series of tableaux vivants. This mix of songs allows the group to build a new theatrical framework, outside the original narrative of the songs, but retains their intrinsic dramatic potential. In this way, LODHO is reclaiming the rich metaphorical ground of Kurt Weill, allowing his music to be seen!

In February L’orchestre d’Hommes-Orchestres were announced as recipients of the Protégé Prize by Robert Lepage, winner of the Glenn Gould Foundation Prize. “Finding yourself out of your comfort zone is something extremely stimulating —that’s exactly what L’orchestre d’hommes-orchestres does for you. Somewhere between music, poetry and visual performance, they create their own art form and you suddenly find yourself treading territories you never knew existed. They turn the ordinary into extraordinary, the expected into the unexpected, and noise into harmony. They are truly unique,” said Robert Lepage.
