Evergreen Line construction hits snag, elevated guideway shifts out of place

A section of the new elevated guideway for the SkyTrain Evergreen Line at Como Lake Avenue and Clarke Road has shifted out of place.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause and the section’s structural integrity. A loud bang was heard just after 1 a.m., which prompted the arrival of RCMP who saw that the guideway had shifted about six inches.


Como Lake will be temporarily closed for most of the day for fear that the section of the guideway could fall onto the street. However, Clark Road has since been reopened by police.

Project management officials do not believe the situation is dangerous as the structure seems to be stable upon first inspection but safety precautions are still being taken. The cause seems to be the result of the failure of a temporary concrete spacer that sits between the pillar and the elevated guideway.

Major delays to the construction schedule is not expected.

The elevated guideway (track) is built with large pre-fabricated concrete segments that are hoisted on top of pillars using a large launching truss and then assembled and tensioned together.

The problem section is located near the Evergreen Line’s 2-km south tunnel portal. Tunnel boring begins this month at the system’s north tunnel portal.

This is the Evergreen Line’s first construction issue, which is uncommon for projects of this size. The new $1.4-billion extension will add 11-kms and six new stations to the region’s SkyTrain system. It will run from Vancouver’s VCC-Clark Station on the existing Millennium Line to provide passengers with the one-train ride convenience of Vancouver to Coquitlam travel.

The extension from Lougheed Town Centre through Port Moody to Coquitlam Town Centre is slated for a summer 2016 opening. It is expected to attract 50,000 daily riders in its first year.
