Launched in late 2008, Illamasqua strives to be a brand that empowers people to express their individuality. With their roots planted deep in the 1920’s Berlin club scene and in the manufacturing of theatrical makeup for TV and film, they are a brand that offers much more than traditional beauty makeup.Illamasqua takes its inspiration from members of ‘alternative scenes’ (people who felt strongly about self-expression). Their highly-pigmented and long wearing products provide both consumers and artists with the ability to bring their visions to life.
On top of being glamorous and edgy, Illamasqua stands strong when it comes to animal cruelty. On their website they state that their products have never and will never be tested on animals. They are committed to working with expert sources to find alternative plant, mineral and synthetic ingredients wherever possible. All Illamasqua brushes are made of synthetic materials and leave you with a flawless finish!
Fun Fact: Illamasqua offers professional funeral makeup transformations; the Final Act of Self-Expression encourages people for whom making-up is an intimate part of their identity to plan their final transformation – one that pays tribute to who they were in life and how they want to enter the afterlife. To wear the most fabulous makeup applied by a professionally trained makeup artist for your final journey is the ultimate statement of celebration. And for about $850 you too can have this done for your final celebration of life!
After visiting the lovely ladies at the Illamasqua counter at The Bay downtown, I was sold. My eyes were opened up to the old-school glam world that Illamasqua embodies.
I have been on the hunt for a quality cake eyeliner for quite some time now and I found it! For those of you that are unsure of what cake eyeliner is, it is a dry (almost looks like an eyeshadow) substance that activates when wet with water or with a sealant and can be used as a liquid eyeliner that is applied with a brush. I prefer cake eyeliners to gel because it allows insane precision when creating the perfect winged liner look.

Another item I found to be amazing is an eyeshadow quad that could be a bit intimidating at first but is extremely versatile and will allow you to create both simple and dramatic looks. In this quad you get two cream shadows (soft mint and pewter liquid metal) and two powder shadows (rich violet and bold yellow). Any one of these shadows can be turned into an intense, long-lasting, water resistant eyeliner with a drop of their sealing gel! The site has a great how-to video using this palette which is perfect for the girl that loves to experiment and play with her makeup. Now, for myself and other artists, this palette could be a great kit addition to help create diverse looks.
Illamasqua offers a discount of 40% off to professionals working in fashion/editoral, education and TV/film. A discount of 20% is offered to estheticians, beauty therapists, students and performers. In order to qualify for these discounts Illamasqua has a list of requirements that must be provided here. Discounts can be redeemed online and at freestanding stores (only located in the UK). Keep in mind that certain items are restricted when shipping from the UK to Canada (such as nail polishes), so I would suggest hitting up their counter at The Bay or your nearest Sephora location!
