Vancouver Clinic First in Canada to Offer Next-Generation Fertility Technology

Vancouver can now add innovative fertility technology as part of its Silicon Valley North portfolio.

Genesis Fertility Centre is the first clinic in Canada and the first commercial clinic in North America to offer Early Embryo Viability Assessment (Eeva) Test – a highly advanced reproductive technology.

Eeva uses intelligent computerized algorithms to predict, with a higher level of accuracy, which embryo will most likely develop. Experts say the test is a non-invasive and safe add-on to traditional in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment.

How it works

Eeva uses a microscope to take photos of an embryo’s cell-division process every five minutes, which enables them to observe the speed and quality of the divisions and more accurately identify the best embryos for implantation.

“Eeva is different from other IVF technology because we can get the whole story of the cell-division process while being able to control the environment of the embryo,” said Herman Rodriguez, Genesis Fertility’s embryologist. “We can adjust the conditions to create an optimum surrounding for the cells to divide, then pick the healthiest embryo as interpreted by Eeva’s computer algorithm.”

What’s the advantage?

Dr. Sonya Kashyap, medical director at Genesis Fertility Centre, said, “If we pick embryos that are chromosomally normal, it will have three advantages: It will reduce miscarriage rates, it will increase probability of pregnancy from a single [IVF] cycle, making that cycle way more cost effective and, hopefully, pick the healthiest embryo. That’s the potential.”

Darla Macey-Nicholson is the first person in Canada to conceive using Eeva and credits the technology for enabling her to become pregnant within one month.
