Surrey’s new City Hall at Whalley opened for business at noon today and is among the municipality’s flagship buildings for its emerging Surrey City Centre.

“The new City Hall is an iconic piece of architecture that has been purpose-built to serve the community,” says City of Surrey Mayor, Dianne Watts. “It is a City Hall that residents can be proud of, and it represents a milestone in Surrey’s transformation into the region’s next great metropolitan centre.”

The construction of City Hall has been a catalyst for investment into the area and is part of a larger vision to transform Surrey’s City Centre into an economic, social and cultural hub; since the announcement of building a new City Hall in City Centre, the private sector has attracted more than $3-billion in current and future investment in the area.

New City Hall amenities for the community include:

  • Improved service delivery, streamlining four previously separate service areas into one-stop counter services
  • City Hall Plaza as a gathering/celebration venue and urban park space
  • A theatre/performing arts venue programmed year round with events
  • Meeting rooms
  • Public Daycare
  • Public Art

The official City Hall Grand Opening for the community will be held on Saturday April 26, 2014. The completion of the new $97-million, 180,000 square foot, LEED Gold certified City Hall comes after the recent opening of the new adjacent library.

The precinct is connected by a large outdoor plaza which includes another flagship building – the 3 Civic Plaza. At 160-metres tall, the building will offer office space, market residential units, and Surrey’s first international renowned hotel chain: the Autograph Collection by Marriott International.
