Whistler RCMP are looking for a man and a woman who were involved in an illegal base jump from Whistler-Blackcomb’s Peak to Peak gondola.
Update (February 13, 10 a.m.): RCMP have arrested the woman seen in the video, according to News 1130. She faces charges of mischief over $5,000, plus obstruction.
Video of the stunt, titled “McConkey Reborn,” has been posted on YouTube. It is believed to be a tribute to Shane McConkey who died in 2009 while performing a stunt in Italy. In 2008, McConkey performed a similar but sanctioned BASE jump stunt from a cabin of the Peak to Peak Gondola.
The couple pried the doors open and waited until they were over Fitzsimmons Creek before the man made his jump. The creek is midway along the gondola route and is located in the valley separating Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains.
At 1,430 feet, it is also the location of the highest point along the 4.4 kilometre, 11-minute gondola ride.
The YouTube video, which was recorded using a GoPro camera, captures his preparations for the jump onboard the gondola as well as the jump down from the gondola.
