Last week, 65-year old Jerry Renkers filed a lawsuit in B.C. Supreme Court in an attempt to force his former fiance to return the $228,000 engagement ring he bought for her.

Renkers met 31-year old, UBC student Jessica Miller in 2012 through EstablishedMen.com, an online dating website for “successful men,” and went on their first date in January 2013. Court documents say Renkers proposed to Miller a year later and received a 3.42-carat, $228,000 yellow diamond ring, including more than $24,000 in taxes, purchased from Tiffany & Co.

However, the relationship was not able to stand the test of engagement and the one ring as it ended ten days after their engagement.

After attempts and refusals, Renkers was not able to retrieve the ring from Miller. On Friday, February 14, Valentine’s Day, the Surrey resident filed a lawsuit against her. The lawsuit has since been canceled due to public exposure over their personal affairs.

The papers indicate the relationship was an expensive one for Renkers. In addition to the ring, he gave her a new Volkswagen car worth $38,000, paid off $50,000 debt and student loans, outfitted her Kitsilano apartment, paid her rent, covered her dental and teeth straightening expenses, spending money, a Visa card and even blank cheques.

He reached a breaking point when Miller used his money to purchase a bicycle and laptop for his brother, and it was at that point that a confrontation over her use of his finances led to a breakup.

Renkers is a widower who lost his wife four months prior to dating Miller. According to documents, his wife’s passing was very difficult on him and he wanted to date again as a way of moving on. Miller reminded him of his deceased wife, who passed away after 25 years of marriage.
