Wish you could eat in peace? Foodtography with Tangoo

Photographers in action!

The worst sound to a rumbling stomach is the *snapsnap* shots of food. Food that you ordered and want to eat right now. What if you could send these photographers somewhere else, instead of waiting for the camera to focus before you dig in? Foodtography is the art of combining food and photography to turn culinary experiences into art.

 Tangoo’s Foodtography Tour

Lemon Meringue and Praline Ganache Tartlets

Tangoo was invited to take a crash course in Foodtography and sample some of Railtown’s dining gems. The tour started off at Cadeaux Bakery with some amazing pastries. A professional photographer taught the group how to take advantage of different angles, focal points, and  natural lighting in the bakery to take shots of their tasty treats. This intro lesson proved to be very useful, as we made use of many of these techniques throughout the tour.

Next, we adventured to Railtown Café, a cozy spot that serves its proteins sous-vide – cooking at low temperatures for a long time period to seal in the flavor of its high-quality meats. Unlike most cafés, Railtown Café has an open kitchen layout where diners can witness this unique process. The main takeaway here was working with different angles and vantage points to create an appealing photo composition. We sampled some appetizers that highlighted its home-made salad, soups and pulled pork.

The Vancouver Urban Winery

Our next stop was the Vancouver Urban Winery, a Tangoo favorite. Seeing the winery from a photographer’s lens completely changed the way the decor and ambiance is appreciated. Photographers are encouraged to tell a story with pictures outside the venue and working inwards. An in-depth tour of the facility was paired delightfully with the winery’s Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

We ended the tour at Cuchillo (pronounced koo-chee-yo), where the lighting became the new challenge. We got some great pictures of their signature illuminated skull (shown below) before going in to indulge in some tasty Mexican tapas and soak in the great atmosphere and decor. As a bonus, the chef offered us the Lois Lake Steelhead Trout Ceviche on the house. Coming back for a full meal is a must!

So to recap, our crash course in Foodtography taught us focal points, angles, lighting, composition, and how to tell a story with the pictures you take – not bad for a first lesson. Now we’re ready to capture real foodie shots and let you eat in peace.
