Cause+Affect, brand strategists behind Modo – The Car Co-op, EPIC – The Sustainable Living Expo, FUSE at the Vancouver Art Gallery and the producers of the wildly popular PechaKucha Night that sells out the Vogue Theatre multiple times a year, have launched a new event series to imagine and create our collective future.

FUEL the Future of Urbanity, the Environment and our Lifestyles

“FUEL is envisioned as a future forum,” said Jane Cox, founder of Cause+Affect and FUEL along with business partner and husband, Steven Cox. “It’s a place for people to talk about what’s next and collaborate on ways to improve how we live, work and play.”

“Unlike industry-specific conferences, FUEL has been designed to attract engaged citizens and Vancouver’s creatives and entrepreneurs. In short, the thinkers and doers,” Jane said.

FUEL’s first event will be held on May 29 and 30, 2014 at The Vancouver Playhouse and will consist of a mix of large-scale theatre presentations, free-flowing breaks and hands-on workshops. The night will be capped off with FUEL Dialogues and an after party.

The themes that drive the inaugural FUEL event will be designtechnologyfood and sustainability, but most importantly “FUEL is about the new ideas and innovative thinking that occur when these themes interact and intersect,” Jane said.

The FUEL Dialogues

The FUEL Dialogues will pair an internationally-renowned speaker with a local expert in the same industry or field. A moderator will lead them through a conversation that merges the themes to stimulate new ideas.

“We want to bring in international speakers in conversation with local leaders and mix and match different themes because real innovation can’t happen in isolation, or without an outside perspective,” Jane said.

“One of the most important things about the FUEL format is that it’s conversational. With the FUEL Dialogues, we want to stimulate a brand new conversation between experts and inspire the participants listening in,” Jane said. “We want the ideas presented at FUEL to be constantly challenged and refined.”

A new model for event ticketing – collaborative event creation

Cause+Affect have launched FUEL by preselling tickets to the May 29 evening event – including the FUEL Dialogues and after party – on ticketing platform Picatic at a reduced rate to encourage early adopters to not only support the event, but to participate in its creation.

“We’re still finalizing the details, narrowing down the programming, securing the speakers and lining up all the little things that will make this an event to remember. And we want FUEL participants to help us shape and grow the experience” Jane said.

Cause+Affect will be reaching out to FUEL participants over Facebook, email and other channels to not only update them about how the event will unfold, but to get their suggestions and approval.

“In the end, we don’t want FUEL to just be a bunch of talking heads or nebulous ideas. We want to turn ideas into action,” Jane said. “If we do it right, FUEL participants to leave with not just new ideas, but with the opportunities, connections and ability to make them happen.”

“We want to shape the future, not just discuss it.”
