Spring 2014 Makeup Trends

When you think spring it’s hard not to think of rosy cheeks and pastels. This year the trends still included the traditional spring elements, but with some edge! Some of the makeup trends gracing the runways of fashion week all over the world included washes of pastel shadows all over the lid and drawn-in/penciled triangles on the outer and inner corners of the eye.  As far as hair goes, retro curls, extreme side parts and messy braids seemed to pop up everywhere.  Needless to say, the runways got me amped for Spring!

MAKEUP

Orange Lips

These lippys were a favorite for many designers this year, such as John Galliano.  Not going to lie, I was extremely intimidated by such a bold, vibrant colour at first sight. My suggestion is to hit up your nearest beauty counter and get the folks there to help you get use to seeing the colour on you before you buy it.  By looking at the picture above, it’s a lip shade that will definitely look great on any skin tone.

Current favourites I have in this colour include:

Vibrant Mandarian by Maybelline Vivids ($7)

Morange by MAC Cosmetics ($18)

Flare by Illamasqua ($24)

The ‘No Makeup’ Makeup Look

This look hit the Balmain runway this year at Paris Fashion Week thanks to MUA Tom Pecheux.  I’ve been rocking this look for the last few weeks and my skin has been thanking me! (I didn’t know it was on trend until recently, I’ve just been super lazy lately…yikes!) Points to remember before applying any makeup are to cleanse, tone and moisturize properly. (Refer to Skincare 101 for additional information)

Items needed for this look:

Eye Cream – To brighten and de-puff the under eye area I would suggest using the Origins GinZing eye cream ($30); it has a hint of shimmer in it to help attract light and help your under eyes appear brighter.

Primer  –  The Miracle Blur primer by L’oreal ($24) is my new jam. I even switched it over to use in my kit and so far, all of my clients have loved it! I use the oil-free version to blur and even out the texture of my skin.

BB Cream – Any sort of tinted moisturizer will work for this. To protect your skin, make sure to use one with SPF!  Apply all over your face to even out your skin tone/colour.  For this look I would suggest the oil-free version of the Laura Mercier Broad Spectrum Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 20 due to its ability to ‘enhance the skin without hiding it’ (as Laura Mercier herself says).

Concealer – Keep it simple and use this to cover up any major blemishes/discolouration if you have any. I find that the Hidden Agenda Concealer Palette by Sonia Kashuk works really well when trying to achieve a natural finish.

Unless you plan on being on the runway, I strongly recommend using a little powder to help set your concealer and keep it from shifting! This look is up to your own interpretation; feel free to add a cheek stain or a tinted lip product if you want to give your look more color. Remember, this look is about raw, natural beauty. Be bold and bare it all this Spring!

NAILS

NAILS:

Horizontal and Vertical Stripes – Those ever-so-frustrating nail art pens will come in extremely handy for this look. One quick swipe on your nails and you’ll be ready to go!

Floating Half Moons – Amp up a bare nail with a little pop of color this season. A little half moon under your cuticle is clean, simple, and fun!

Half Sparkle Nails – A nail full of sparkle is a little hard to pull off with looking too ‘holiday’.  I LOVE sparkles on my nails and usually I’m okay with looking like I’m in elementary school but ever since I saw this look, I became obsessed. It’s a fun way to incorporate sparkle and look trendy at the same time. Opt for only painting half your nail in glitter instead!

Step comfortably out of Winter and into Spring by giving one of these trends a try.  It’s all about feeling fresh, fun and chic!

Until next time, your friendly, neighborhood beauty addict!
