Point Grey Protests

Vancouverites have gathered this morning along Point Grey Road to protest the permanent closure of a section of the road for the construction of a new separated bike lane.

This is an issues that has many in the community upset. In a recent online poll, over 60% of our readers were against the bike lane.

Location and expected duration of closures via Global BC:

West 3rd Avenue at Bayswater Street and Macdonald Street

  • Start: October 2013
  • End: mid-January 2014

West 4th Avenue between Stephens Street and Bayswater Street

  • Start: October 2013
  • End: Mid-January 2014

West 4th Avenue between Bayswater Street and Macdonald Street

  • Start: November 2013
  • End: mid-January 2014

Point Grey Road between Alma Street and Jericho Beach Park

  • Start: Monday, November 4, 2013
  • End: February 2014

Point Grey Road conversion to a local street (west of Macdonald Street)

Traffic pattern changes start: Saturday, January 18, 2014

Point Grey Road between Macdonald Street and Bayswater Street

  • Start: Monday, January 20, 2014
  • End: June 2014

The Kitsilano Chamber of Commerce also opposes the bike lane. They feel that traffic will be diverted to 4th Avenue, a street that is already busy during peak periods.

The City of Vancouver on the other hand is claiming that Point Grey Road was not meant to be major commuter route.

The new bike lane will connect Jericho Beach Park with the Burrard Bridge, making it safer for cyclists and completing the seawall bike path.

With an election coming this fall, expect even more protests on bike lanes. While bike lanes may be an issue, they are trivial when once considers the other issues facing the city. The issue of pricing out the young and the continual homogenization of the city is one that deserves far more attention than bike lanes.
