Heavy rain led to the washout of a beaver dam which caused the derailment of a Canadian National Railway train near Burnaby Lake on Saturday morning.
50 mm of rain was seen in the region over an overnight period that began Friday night. The beaver dam wash out weakened of the rail tracks at Government Street and Cariboo Road.
Three cars filled with powdered coal derailed from the a 152-car train, spilling some of their contents into a creek that feeds into Burnaby Lake. There were no injuries, however, the creek is part of Burnaby Lake’s sensitive fish habitat and is protected by Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
Crews are currently in the process of cleaning up the spill from both the tracks and the creek.
