Surrey farmer floods field to create giant outdoor ice rink (PHOTOS)

By Vancity Buzz Staff | 9 months ago | Speak Up

A Surrey farmer is taking advantage of our frigid temperatures by flooding his field with water to create a massive outdoor ice rink for the community to skate and play on.

Tim Hortons is supplying free hot chocolate to the skaters at the farm. Skates have also been made available from a used sporting goods store for people who do not own skates.

It is located at God’s Little Acre Farm (16582 40th Avenue in Surrey) which grows food for charity. Skating on the ice rink is free, however, the operators of the farm are asking the public to make a donation if they can. All proceeds will go towards the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

Unlike other regions of Canada, this is the first time in years that it has been cold enough in Metro Vancouver to create a quality and long-lasting outdoor ice surface for skating.

Beginning today, the ice rink will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. although its opening hours depends entirely on weather conditions. Warmer temperatures above freezing are forecasted after this weekend.
