Christmas is just around the corner, and the big question is, do you have your ugly Christmas Sweater yet? The Ugly Christmas Sweater has become synonymous with the holiday season, and Vancouverites are some of its biggest fans. Last year, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson even officially proclaimed December 21 as Ugly Christmas Sweater Day. This shouldn’t be too surprising considering Vancouver is allegedly the birthplace of the Ugly Christmas Sweater.
Gone are the days when we made fun of weird Uncle Frank (Home Alone, anyone?) for wearing his ugly Christmas sweater to the family dinner party. Now, some of us own multiple of these sweaters, and even purposely wear it out to a party or a bar. So what exactly makes a Christmas sweater ugly? Think tacky, corny, and funny. A green knit sweater with a large Rudolph and an even larger red nose that lights up? Amazing. An oversize blue sweater with a huge Christmas tree in it with ALL the lights lighting up, and 3D presents stuck on it? Even better, and wear it proudly.

While many stores across Vancouver will sell Christmas sweaters, sometimes it is fun to get creative and make it your own. After grabbing a sweater, get creative by adding accessories such as Christmas lights, or a clear pouch to stick your smart phones in and play your favourite Christmas movies on your sweater. You can also make a Frosty the Snowman out of cotton balls (this one I know from experience). Once you have your awesome, ugly sweater, be sure to wear it out to one of the many Vancouver Ugly Christmas Sweater events. A party not to be missed is the Commodore Ballroom’s 12th annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Party on December 20.
