Man climbs atop EAST VAN Cross sign to light flare

EAST VAN cross sign

A man was spotted climbing the EAST VAN cross sign early this morning. Upon reaching the very top, the man sat on the sign and lit a road flare… for all of East Vancouver to see?

Did the dare devil climb it for a photo op? Was this an S.O.S. signal? Was he trying to be a aircraft light for ‘tall’ structures? Is this part of the system of warning beacons for Gondor?

The 60-foot tall EAST VAN Cross sign sits prominently at the corner of Great Northern Way and Clark Drive. Clyde Harrelson passed by the sign at 7:30 a.m. this morning and witnessed the stunt. He was able to take a few shots of the man through the fence and submitted these photos to us.

Quite appropriately, the origins of the EAST VAN cross dates back half a century when it was a symbol for greasers and rebellious teenagers. They would draw the symbol on their denim jackets and as graffiti onto walls and sidewalks.
