Kamloops is a big playground. Think outdoor adventures, a budding gastronomy scene, and a lot for any animal lover to see and do. We spent a fall weekend here and in the end, it had us rethinking Kamloops as a bit of a destination rather than just a pitstop when touring the Okanagan – you just need to know where to go.

Here’s our roundup of 5 things to eat, see or do in Kamloops, British Columbia.

1. Erin Valley Riding Stable

Once you’re at Erin Valley Stables, you’ll have trouble believing it’s only a 15 minute drive from downtown Kamloops. The horses are naturally a big hit and you’ll see everything from twenty-somethings to a two-year old (true story) taking riding lessons. But their animal kingdom also includes mini horses (dressed in visor and leopard print, naturally as you do), bunnies, donkeys and more – all of which you are welcome to pet and cuddle with. Perfect for families with young kids that want to get in touch with their equestrian side.

2. Terra Restaurant and The Noble Pig Brewhouse

There’s a growing number of restaurants that are doing great things in Kamloops. The first of note is The Noble Pig Brewhouse. This brewhouse has an extensive list of local craft beers for tasting, but also offers a great selection of comfort foods to rounds things out. We tried the poutine and pulled pork sandwich and would happily go back as there were a many dishes that caught our eye.

Terra Restaurant is a gem in Kamloops. We started off the night with their cheese plate which was served with fresh, house made breads. I’m still thinking about the plate – local, fresh, tasty and thoughtful. Not to be outdone by the starter, the fish and pork belly with scallops were just right.

3. BC Wildlife Park

Cougars, and moose, and grizzly bears. Oh, my! The BC Wildlife Park is home to 65 species – all indigenous to BC. They are a premiere animal conservation and education site, and you may be surprised to learn what animals are indigenous to our province, including cougars, lynx, and even the bactrian camel.

4. Harper’s Trail Winery

Kamloops’ first winery has Chardonnay coming off the vine this fall, to add to their growing selection of vinos. The 18-acre vineyard is the first of its kind in the city and is a nice sign of things to come for Kamloops.

5. Sunmore Ginseng Spa

Taking the farm-fresh concept to another level is Sunmore Ginseng Spa. This spa uses the restorative healing powers of the herb, grown directly in the fields in Kamloops, into the massage room. If that doesn’t satisfy your hankering for the herb (which takes 5 years to grow), visit their factory to see it up close and personal.
