Women of Vancouver (WofV) is a monthly editorial featuring the most stylish and professional women in Vancouver. Style by Sarai recently interviewed Dr. Michelle Sayour for this exclusive in-depth photo editorial.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE DENTISTRY AS A CAREER?
I had some cosmetic dentistry done when I was a teen- let’s just say the Madonna or Letterman gap between the front teeth wasn’t as fashionable back then. I saw first-hand how a dentist could change someone’s life. I asked my dentist how she chose dentistry and she said, “If you like art and people, it’s perfect.” I made my decision then and there.

WHAT DO YOU FIND REWARDING ABOUT DENTISTRY?
Helping to improve someone’s health is a big reward. There is also an artistic component that I find highly rewarding – rebuilding a tooth or cosmetically enhancing someone’s smile.

I also value trying to make someone’s dental experience the best that it can be – from making a patient comfortable, to explaining the treatment and options. It makes a difference for people.

WHAT ARE YOUR INTERESTS AND HOBBIES?
Fitness is important to me, and that’s one of the best parts of living in Vancouver. It’s easy to have a healthy lifestyle. I train a couple of times a week at Studeo 55 and also go to hot yoga at YYoga. I’ve been painting for the last 10 years, as well.

GIOVANE CAFE | 1038 Canada Place, Vancouver

VANCOUVER IS BECOMING KNOWN FOR HAVING GREAT CAFES. WHERE DO YOU FIND YOURSELF GOING?
Giovane Cafe is my favourite. I love travelling and the fact Giovane is connected to a hotel gives it an energy that always reminds me of this. There are so many interesting people and faces. I cannot say enough good things about the staff. They know how to connect with regulars and travelers alike.

My drink of choice is the matcha latte … and let’s just say I’ve found every possible way to modify it. It always makes me smile when I start to “recite” the drink and they stop me as they already know it. Another reason I love this place.

MIKU RESTAURANT | 70-200 Granville Street, Vancouver

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE RESTAURANT?
Miku is definitely one of my go-to places any time of year. When you combine an incredible atmosphere with inventive food, you can bank on a great experience. I started going when Miku was still in its original location in Coal Harbour, but the new location has really made the dining experience that much more enjoyable. Great music, too!

ANY RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE MENU?
Their specialty is aburi sushi. When you have it, you’ll know why! I always enjoy the Hearts & Greens Farm Tofu Salad. I have yet to meet a friend that isn’t wowed by the flavour.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO SOCIALLY?
Catching up with friends over dinner or a drink is a great way to spend time. One of my favourite spaces is the lobby lounge at Fairmont Pacific Rim. It’s such a grand, expansive room with incredible lighting. The fireplace being the centrepiece is very Vancouver … so cozy on a rainy day. The staff is wonderful, as well.

WHAT’S YOUR DRINK OF CHOICE?
Champagne is always a favourite.

PROVIDE
 | 529 Beatty Street, Vancouver

MICHELLESEYOURxKRISPOR5

HOW DID YOU GET INTO ART?
I’ve always been drawn to visual and artistic pursuits. I bought some materials and just started experimenting and it grew from there. I’ve been fortunate to have worked on a few residential commissions over the years, and I recently had a piece on display at a venue during Vancouver Fashion Week.

DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF ART.
Modern abstract acrylic. I use various mediums that allow me to layer, creating a ‘sculpture’ effect on the canvas. Given the colors are generally quite neutral, texture is the main feature of my work.

WITH YOUR BUSY CAREER, WHEN DO YOU FIND TIME TO PAINT?
I love painting quite early in the morning, but I’ll do it whenever inspiration hits. I have found myself with paint in hand, still dressed in work clothes two minutes after walking through the door.

WHAT IS YOUR CONNECTION TO “PROVIDE”?
Owners Robert Quinnell and David Keeler have created a fantastic, highly-edited collection of modern unique pieces that you won’t find elsewhere. Being in the store is a feast for the eyes, not only the collections they have – but the space itself is incredible. There was a period of time I had a few of my paintings there. Provide is wonderful!

HOW DO INTERIOR DECOR AND FASHION OVERLAP IN YOUR LIFE?
Expressing your style, both in your surroundings and wardrobe, makes for an environment that cultivates happiness for me, and that’s a great place to come from on any day. My preference  for both could be described as minimalist with clean lines, and fairly neutral palate. I find calm in a home that’s monochromatic and open.
