In the latest set of global university rankings, the QS World Rankings List has ranked the University of British Columbia as the world’s top 49th university.

Along with the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and the Shanghai-based Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), the QS World Rankings is among the three most reputable rankings of universities around the world.

UBC’s 49th placing meant a slight drop from its 2012 ranking of 45th, while SFU leaped to 244th from its 2012 ranking of 282nd. In comparison, UBC was ranked 30th by the 2013 Times Higher Education World University Rankings and 40th by the 2013 ARWU.

Overall, Canadian universities saw gains in the QS World Rankings compared to the same list made in 2012. However, the University of Victoria saw a major drop from 299th to 321st (Western Ontario and Queen’s also saw significant falls) .

The QS World Rankings is based on academic reputation surveys, employer reputation surveys, faculty-student ratio (smaller is better), research citations per faculty, and the proportion of international students and faculty.
